SRT Barracuda: the rumored muscle car
Chrysler is working on two new sets of future vehicles:
-
E-EVO, a very flexible platform intended to accommodate front and rear wheel drive, cars, crossovers, minivans, and possibly a pickup or two
-
D-RWD (that’s not an official name but we had to call it something), a mid-sized rear wheel drive car needed to re-establish Alfa Romeo as a BMW competitor.
- RVC wrote, echoing confidential sources, “This new D architecture is a joint project, but it’s being developed in Detroit with Fiat engineers who have been flown over to be embedded permanently in the project. … This decision (having a RWD D-segment architecture) was a very costly proposition, and they took a good two years of tinkering between finance and marketing before they finally reached the decision to go ahead with this. … E-Evo was discarded [for this purpose] last year, when it became obvious that if you shorten it too much … bulky elements like the cowl or the rear shoulders tend to become even more invasive.”
- One source wrote that this is “CUSW compliant architecture” which will be used for the Giulia, “same platform, but RWD architecture.”
There are two parallel sets of comments from Chrysler execs and insiders, and we present them to you now.

SRT unveils new NASCAR Charger (updated)
While the promised live video stream didn’t work out, Chrysler’s SRT Motorsports team unveiled the 2013 Dodge Charger Sprint Cup car on schedule this morning at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Ralph Gilles pointed out that it was the only rear-wheel-drive car in Sprint Cup competition that could be purchased (stock) with a V8 engine.
NASCAR relaxed the template rules for racing cars, allowing automakers to make the sheet metal and glass closer to the look of the production cars.
Responding to concerns about whether Dodge will still be racing next year, with Penske defecting to Ford, Ralph Gilles said they were looking at range of options, from leaving NASCAR entirely to tripling their investment; he also said they were getting numerous inquiries from other teams.
